Jewelry for Diabetics
People already value their jewelry. Through Leah Heiss’ work, however, people will come to value them even more as jewelry can become functional and therapeutic as well as decorative.
Leah Heiss, a Canadian artist, is currently busy on her project of combining art and nanotechnology with the ultimate end of producing wearable yet functional artifacts. In cooperation with Nanotechnology Victoria in Australia where she is currently a resident, she is designing and making jewelry that will make lives a little bit easier on diabetics. Specifically, she has been able to create rings and necklaces which have the ability to introduce insulin to the body.
Leah Heiss’ rings and neckpieces are hip and trendy, but they don’t just look good; they are utilitarian, too. They can administer insulin through the skin. This is made possible through the NanoVic transdermal patches that have been incorporated into the jewelry’s design. Apart from insulin-administering jewelry, Leah Heiss has also been able to come up with artwork that can remove arsenic from drinking water.
